Brenda Gael Smith lives and creates on the land of the Darkinjung people at Copacabana on the Central Coast. She creates textile paintings and sketches made from a rich palette of her hand-dyed fabrics complemented by extensive, textural stitching demonstrating the transformative power of stitch. Abstraction is a persistent and insistent force. Working improvisationally, she captures the essence of my subjects to impart a sense of wonder of the natural world and a strong affinity to place.
Brenda’s teaching focus is on freeform piecing, effective design and the use of colour – to promote fun and encourage creative momentum. Her presentations and workshops draw upon her experience and insights as an exhibiting artist, curator, judge, quilt judging educator, writer and mentor.
